Dock 72
Brooklyn, NY
Dock 72 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is transforming a deserted dry dock into a vibrant commercial space, with shared-office company We Work as the anchor tenant. The building is composed of glass, cement and metal mesh to fit aesthetically into the post-industrial Navy Yard. MPFF was commissioned to design the outdoor spaces and exterior terraces, shaping complimentary outdoor rooms for the building’s future tenants.
Resting between the proposed building and the waterfront, MPFP positioned benches, lounge chairs, a basketball court and planted areas, providing a variety of uses to this singular space. A graffiti wall separates the site from an unused dry dock and a large lawn space brings passive recreational opportunities into the space.
At the entrance of the building, MPFP designed shade structures for bus and shuttle-bus drop-off areas in addition to zones for bike racks, accommodating a multitude of commuters. Building these structures using the building’s materials of colored cement and metal, the exterior spaces become an extension of the heritage of the site as well as a marker for its future.
