La Jolla Commons

MPFP brought life to an otherwise common housing project, creating layers of landscaping and developing an inversion of public and private spaces. Conceptually, La Jolla Commons subtly differentiates between what is public and private space, and provides spaces that bring both spaces together.

Designing the main entrance drive through the center of the project, MPFP opened the heart of this complex to the public, aligning its axis between a residential neighborhood and the local light rail; pedestrians bring activity and energy to this complex daily.

To reinforce a visually and spatially connected public and private landscape, an on-grade sculpture park adjacent to the hotel, ostensibly part of the private landscape, connects this complex to the larger public realm inducing a similar, visual effect, with intention to create a sense of inclusion and protection.
